Description
In 2004, Hannah Pool knew more about next season's lipstick colors than she did about Africa: a beauty editor for The Guardian newspaper, she juggled lattes and cocktails, handbags and hangouts through her twenties just like any other beautiful, independent Londoner. Her white, English adoptive relatives were beloved to her and were all the family she needed.
Contacted by relatives she didn't know she had, she decided to visit Eritrea, the war-torn African country of her birth, and answer for herself the daunting questions every adopted child asks.
What Hannah Pool learned on her journey forms a narrative of insight, wisdom, wit, and warmth beyond all expectations.
Amharic Kids Review: If you have adopted children, especially from Ethiopia, you MUST read this book!!

My Father’s Daughter by Hannah Pool
A Review by Jane Steiner
Hannah Pool’s book, My Father’s Daughter, is filled with the unique questions adoptees and their families carry about family, culture and identity. From the seemingly innocuous opening question to the heartbreaking final question, these inquiries mirror the experiences of adoptees everywhere. Reading Ms. Pool’s account of her journey to find her answers is emotional and fascinating. The almost stream of consciousness narrative invites the reader along for the intimate ride of raw emotion that carries Ms. Pool to Eritrea to meet her birth family and explore the origins of her life. Through this honest, revealing book, the reader is able to experience Ms. Pool’s anxiety, wonder, frustration, grief, and excitement as she seeks to piece together the circumstances of her relinquishment, even as she is embraced anew by the family once lost. As Ms. Pool finds her answers, which often spark further questions, My Father’s Daughter reveals the complicated process many adult international adoptees experience in an effort to embrace the diasporas of their lives.
Jane Steiner is a wife, mom, teacher and writer in Minneapolis. As founder of the EKC Adoption Book Club, she enjoyed reading My Father’s Daughter as one of the group’s selections.
